Website Quotes, The Facts

A.K.A. How to Get the Right Website Quote (and stay sane!)

Before You Request a Website Quote – READ THIS…

You’re looking for a new website...You need a web designer...There are thousands of companies to get a quote from...Where do you start?  Here are my 5 Golden Rules for Getting the Perfect Website Quote...

Website Quote Golden Rule #1

Make sure you’ve got a project brief.  It sounds dull but you definitely need to write down what you want in clear terms.  The phone just doesn’t cut it because you can never be consistent.  So to give everyone the same chance here’s what you need to add into your brief:

  1. Your aim
  2. Your target market
  3. The structure (think ‘navigation’)
  4. The content (as much as you can/have)
  5. Any functionality (e.g. forms, downloadable files, search facilities, etc),
  6. Sites you like and don’t like
  7. Ecommerce requirements
  8. Training needs

Website Quote Golden Rule #2

Get a clear breakdown of what you’re going to get for you money and what’s included and what’s not included.  You’ll also need to know who owns the end result – amazing though this is if a company builds your website they can end up owning it as their intellectual property!

Website Quote Golden Rule #3

Get them to give you some reference sites and ideally past clients you can talk to about how the project went.  (Obviously they’re not going to give you people who hate them but you can still ask some awkward questions to get to the truth!)

Website Quote Golden Rule #4

There are more than 1 TRILLION web pages on the Internet.  That’s 147 pages for every person on Earth. So, you’ll definitely want your web designer’s quote to include how they are going to get yours noticed?  This is everything to do with Search Engine Optimisation and Google Adwords!

Website Quote Golden Rule #5

Whatever money you spend on a website you’ll want to get at least 10 times back.  After all if you’re not going to get a tenfold return put your cash into some other marketing that will. SO, when you request your quote make sure that the web designers give you a clear plan on how to market your site.

Which is the most important for your quote?  NUMBER 5! In the end it doesn’t really matter if you website doesn’t look perfect or have the best Content Management System money can buy.  The ONLY question of relevance is how your web designers are going to help to turn that website quote into a website return.
