Any decent website is built to order. It’s like building a house - the price of a bachelor pad is very different to a 10 bedroom mansion. So, what you want determines the price you pay.

If you only want a very basic website with a few pages then it's only going to cost you hundreds of pounds. For larger more complex websites (e.g. ecommerce) you can expect a price of thousands.

This isn't really very helpful and most web design companies will just give you a total price. But what you need is the number of hours they will be working on your project – Divide the total price by the number of hours they’re working and you have their hourly rate. Using the guide below you can work out what their capabilities are and end result you're likely to get.

Low Web Design Price - £20-£35/hour.

These are freelance rates so expect only one person to be working on your project. There are the obvious risks of only having one resource (holidays, going sick, etc) but you can get extremely skilful, dedicated (and cheap) people to build your site.

Mid-Range Web Design Price - £35-£65/hour.

This will typically be smaller businesses (start-ups, 'lifestyle' businesses, etc). They have more resources available so all your eggs aren't in one basket. This also means they will probably have more expertise than one person can offer. Plus, businesses tend to have more safeguards; backup procedures, version control systems, etc.

Upper Web Design Price - £65-£125/hour.

These are larger businesses often dealing with more marketing-driven websites. They have the advantage of more resources (so, theoretically more expertise) which means they should deliver more technically challenging solutions. Plus expect a dedicated project manager and a whole heap of online marketing skills (Google Adwords, SEO, etc).
